Overview;
Florida is a U.S. state located in the Southeastern region of the country. It is bordered by the Gulf of Mexico to the west, Alabama to the northwest, Georgia to the north, the Atlantic Ocean to the east, and the Straits of Florida and Cuba to the south. Two-thirds of Florida consists of a peninsula nestled between the Gulf and the Atlantic, featuring the longest coastline in the contiguous United States, which measures approximately 1,350 miles (2,170 km). With a population exceeding 21 million, Florida is the third-most populous state in the U.S. and ranks eighth in population density. The state covers an area of 65,758 square miles (170,310 km²), making it the 22nd largest by area. Jacksonville is the largest city, while the Miami metropolitan area is the state's most populous region.
History;
Florida has been inhabited by various American Indian tribes for at least 14,000 years. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León was the first known European to land in the region in 1513, naming it La Florida, meaning "land of flowers." St. Augustine, founded in 1565, is recognized as the oldest continuously inhabited city in the U.S. After changing hands between Spain and Great Britain, Florida was ceded to the U.S. in 1819. It became the 27th state on March 3, 1845. Florida's history includes significant events such as the Seminole Wars and its secession from the Union during the Civil War, followed by readmission in 1868.
Economy and Demographics;
Since the mid-20th century, Florida has seen substantial demographic and economic growth. Its economy, with a gross state product (GSP) of $1.647 trillion, ranks fourth among U.S. states and 15th globally. Key sectors include tourism, hospitality, agriculture, real estate, and transportation. Florida is famous for its beach resorts and attractions like Walt Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center, attracting millions of visitors each year. Florida's climate ranges from subtropical in the north to tropical in the south, making it one of the few states, alongside Hawaii, with a tropical climate. The state is home to unique ecosystems, including Everglades National Park, the largest tropical wilderness in the U.S. Notable wildlife includes the American alligator, manatee, and various bird species. The Florida Reef is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S. and ranks as the third-largest globally.
