New York City Mayor Eric Adams Indicted by Grand Jury: Media Reports

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been indicted on federal criminal charges, according to sources familiar with the matter. The charges, which remain sealed, were initially reported by The New York Times. Sources, speaking to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, stated that details of the indictment are still unclear.

Adams addressed New Yorkers in a video statement on Wednesday, expressing his belief that the charges are based on falsehoods. "I have always known that standing my ground for the people of New York would make me a target," Adams said. "For months, there have been leaks and rumors aimed at undermining my credibility."

The mayor emphasized his innocence, stating, "If I’m charged, I know I am innocent. I will request an immediate trial so that New Yorkers can hear the truth."

Adams has suggested that the investigation is politically motivated, possibly linked to his criticisms of the federal government’s handling of immigration. "Despite our pleas, the federal government failed to address its broken immigration policies, overwhelming our city’s shelter system," he stated.

The investigation into Adams and his team began last November, with the FBI reportedly focusing on potential illegal foreign donations to his 2021 mayoral campaign, allegedly involving the Turkish government. The mayor’s chief fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, had her home searched, and Adams’ electronic devices were seized in connection with the investigation.

Despite the turmoil, including the resignation of several top aides and city officials, Adams has vowed to continue serving as mayor unless proven guilty. "The people of New York elected me to fight for them, and I will continue to do so," he said.

The FBI and federal prosecutors have not commented on the case.

Adams, a former NYPD officer and Brooklyn borough president, was elected mayor in 2021. His administration has been heavily focused on addressing a housing crisis exacerbated by a surge in illegal immigrants overwhelming the city’s resources.
