A Chorus of Minds: Crafting the Guiding Light for AI's Future

 Academics to Develop EU GPAI Code of Practice: Defining Risk Management and Transparency for AI Systems;

A diverse group of scholars has been selected to create the Code of Practice for general-purpose AI (GPAI), aimed at establishing clear guidelines on risk management and transparency for AI systems such as ChatGPT, in line with the EU AI Act.

The drafting process will be led by a team of experts, including the well-known AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio, alongside specialists in the technical, legal, and societal facets of AI. Yoshua Bengio, often referred to as a "godfather of AI," will oversee the group focusing on technical risk mitigation. Law professor Alexander Peukert and AI governance specialist Marietje Schaake will also contribute significantly to the development of the Code.

This announcement follows concerns from three prominent MEPs who questioned the timing and the international expertise of the working group leaders. Nonetheless, the team features a broad range of scholars and researchers from institutions worldwide, ensuring a well-rounded perspective in the drafting process.

The first draft of the Code is anticipated in November, following a workshop for GPAI providers scheduled for mid-October. Until official standards are finalized in 2026, the EU AI Act will rely on this Code of Practice to establish guidelines that balance innovation and AI safety.
